A look behind the last Swiss umbrella factory
Swiss craftsmanship that endures
When it rains, most people think of grey days. For the Strotz family, however, rain means something quite different: passion, craftsmanship and living tradition. In the workshop in Uznach, genuine Swiss-made umbrellas are created – with a wealth of experience and attention to detail. Every umbrella goes through around 70 production stages and thousands of stitches before it is finished. This shows that an umbrella is far more than an everyday item – it is a precision-engineered product comprising over 300 individual parts.
Quality rather than a disposable product
Whilst cheap umbrellas are often only used for a short time, Strotz deliberately focuses on durability. The perception of many consumers has changed – today, the umbrella is often regarded as a disposable item. This is precisely where the company comes in: with high-quality materials, repair options and a conscious approach to resource use.
Tradition and the future united
Today, the umbrella factory is run by Andrea and Roman Strotz – now in its fifth generation. In addition to its own production in Switzerland, Strotz is also active internationally. Hundreds of thousands of umbrellas are produced annually, yet manufacturing in Uznach remains a central part of the brand’s identity.
Why does a good umbrella make all the difference?
A high-quality umbrella impresses not only in the rain, but for years to come:
- sturdy in wind and weather
- durable rather than disposable
- well-thought-out design down to the last detail
